CBSE changed the Class 10 board exam from 2026. Students now get two chances in the same year. Here is what that means for students appearing in 2027, and how to plan the year around it.
How the two-exam system works
- First exam (February–March): compulsory. Every Class 10 student must appear. Results are usually declared in April.
- Second exam (May): optional. Students who want to improve their score can appear again in up to three subjects, such as Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages. Results are usually declared in June.
- The better score counts. If a student writes both exams in a subject, the higher marks are used in the final result.
Students who fail one or two subjects in the first exam can use the second exam as a compartment chance. Details can change, so always confirm the latest rules on the official CBSE website before registering.
What this means for preparation
The second exam is a safety net, not a plan. Students who aim to “fix it in May” lose their summer, stay under exam pressure for longer, and start Class 11 late. The goal should be to score your best in the February–March exam itself.
A preparation plan for 2027
June to October
- Finish NCERT chapters thoroughly. Almost every board question is built on NCERT concepts.
- Take a test after every chapter and keep an error notebook.
- Practise case-based and assertion–reason questions from the start, not only in January.
November to December
- Complete the syllabus and start full-length timed papers.
- Use CBSE sample papers to understand question types and marking.
January to February
- Revise from your own notes and error notebook.
- Solve at least five full papers per main subject under exam conditions.
Common mistakes we see
- Skipping NCERT in-text questions and examples.
- Memorising answers instead of understanding concepts, which fails on application questions.
- Ignoring internal assessment, which is part of every main subject’s total.
- Writing long answers without structure. Examiners look for key points.
