The 10th standard year is stressful for the whole family. Parents want to help, but often the help feels like pressure to the child. These are the suggestions we share with parents at our board-exam seminars.
1. Build a routine, not a timetable on the wall
A simple routine works better than a perfect timetable. Fixed times for waking up, study blocks, meals and sleep reduce daily arguments. Let your child help decide the routine, so it feels like theirs.
2. Protect sleep
Teenagers need seven to eight hours of sleep. Late-night studying before an exam usually lowers performance. Memory and concentration improve after proper sleep.
3. Keep food simple and regular
Regular home-cooked meals, enough water, and light snacks during study time help more than any special “exam diet”. Avoid heavy meals just before a study session or an exam.
4. Handle the phone together
Banning the phone completely often backfires. Agree on phone-free study blocks, keep the phone outside the study room, and allow a fixed break time.
5. Ask better questions
Instead of “How much did you study today?”, try:
- “Which chapter felt easier this week?”
- “Is there a doubt you want to ask your teacher tomorrow?”
- “What can I do to make tomorrow easier for you?”
6. Avoid comparisons
Comparing marks with cousins, neighbours or classmates rarely motivates. It usually creates fear. Compare your child only with their own last test.
7. Stay in touch with teachers
Teachers see test results and classroom behaviour every week. A short conversation with the teacher each month tells you more than daily questioning at home.
8. Notice signs of stress
Changes in sleep, appetite, irritability or avoiding study altogether can be signs that your child is overwhelmed. Talk calmly, reduce pressure, and involve the school counsellor or a professional if it continues.
9. Celebrate effort, not only marks
Praise a finished revision plan, an improved test score or a week of steady work. Children who feel supported perform better under exam pressure.
