Class 10 Science: Which Chapters Carry the Most Marks and How to Study Them

Science is a high-scoring subject when you study it unit by unit and give more time to the units that carry more marks. Here is how the marks are spread in CBSE and SSC, and how to study each part.

CBSE Class 10 Science: where the 80 marks are

Under the recent CBSE curriculum, the 80-mark theory paper is spread roughly like this:

  • Chemical Substances: Nature and Behaviour (acids, bases, salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds): about 25 marks
  • World of Living (life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity): about 25 marks
  • Effects of Current (electricity, magnetic effects): about 13 marks
  • Natural Phenomena (light, human eye): about 12 marks
  • Natural Resources (our environment): about 5 marks

Weightage can change each year. Confirm with the latest CBSE curriculum document for your exam year.

SSC Class 10 Science: two papers

In the Maharashtra State Board, Science is written as Science and Technology Part 1 (mainly Physics and Chemistry) and Part 2 (mainly Biology and environment), each with a 40-mark board paper plus internal assessment. Both parts matter equally, so neither can be left for the end.

How to study each area

Chemistry

  • Learn reactions as patterns, not as a list. Know what happens, why it happens and how to balance the equation.
  • Practise writing balanced chemical equations daily for the last two months.
  • Carbon compounds need extra practice with naming and structures.

Biology

  • Diagrams carry marks. Practise the main diagrams (digestive system, heart, neuron, flower, nephron) until you can draw and label them in under three minutes.
  • Use flowcharts for processes such as digestion, respiration and reproduction.
  • Write answers using the exact textbook terms.

Physics

  • Electricity and Light are numerical-heavy. Solve every textbook example and exercise.
  • Ray diagrams must be neat, with arrows and proper labels.
  • Write formula, substitution, answer and unit for every numerical.

A simple revision rule

For every chapter, keep one page with key definitions, one with diagrams, and one with numericals or equations. In the final month, revise only from these pages and your test papers.
